With two year-round restaurants, the seasonal cafeteria at Ivan’s, a banquet staff for groups of all sizes, plus beverage carts and golf course halfway houses, Shanty Creek’s Food & Beverage team has many mouths to feed. And that team is led by two of the best, Andy Hoopfer and Michel Newton.
Andy Hoopfer, Executive Chef for Summit Village, is a Traverse City resident. He is a 2004 graduate of the Great Lakes Culinary Institute. Andy has been with Shanty Creek Resorts for eight years where his creations have been recognized and awarded (Best Pairing at the Wineries of Old Mission Mac & Cheese Cook Off, and former winner of the Traverse City Chili Cook Off). In his spare time, Andy loves golf. He still dreams of being a professional golfer.
Michel Newton, Executive Chef for Cedar River and Schuss Village, was born and raised in Battle Creek, MI. At 21 he became a Restaurant Chef at Porter’s Steakhouse. Without formal culinary school, he made his way up the ranks through hard work and determination. A past winner of Antrim County Chili Cook Off contest, Michel has been with Shanty Creek since 2007. In previous roles he worked under Executive Chef Andrew Reh at the McCamly Plaza Hotel. He is a master morel mushroom hunter.
